Throughout October United Garage Limited, Hertz International franchisee for Malta promoted breast cancer awareness among its staff and, along with its customers, decided to support the Action for Breast Cancer Foundation.
Set up in 2007 by the late Helen Muscat and Esther Sant, the current chairperson, the foundation campaigns for breast awareness and quality assured service in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in Malta and Gozo.
Both had experienced the lack of services offered to persons diagnosed with breast cancer: no information tailored to the needs of newly diagnosed patients; and no guidance on where to find adequate brassieres and prosthetics for patients undergoing mastectomy and a few support services. So, Helen and Esther set out to create a one-stop shop at the hospital breast clinic.
Today, the foundation offers each person diagnosed with breast cancer a folder in which to keep all the relevant information they may need, a free brassiere to those who have undergone a mastectomy and free psychological services. Following extensive lobbying, the government now offers free prostheses to mastectomy patients.
Hertz Malta collected donations from customers at its three locations: its head office in Qormi Road, Luqa; the Hertz Rental location at Malta International Airport (MIA); and its outlet at Pendergardens in St Julian’s. These donations were topped up with the donation of a percentage from each car rental during October.
In addition, educational videos were shown and other documentation on the signs to look out for of breast cancer was distributed to the staff during an internal event at the Hertz rental location at MIA.
“United Garage is committed to supporting breast cancer awareness and we feel that, through these three initiatives, we have made a small contribution in this area,” said Sean Gatt Baldacchino, Sales and Marketing Manager of United Garage Limited, when presenting a donation to Ms Sant earlier this month at the Hertz Pendergardens outlet.
Ms Sant thanked United Garage Ltd, Hertz International Franchisee for Malta, for their initiative and their generous support.
